Originating in China more than 2,000 years ago, acupuncture is based on the idea that the body has 14 well defined pathways, or meridians, of energy. These channels convey the body's life force, known as QI (pronounced chee). According to Chinese medical theory, pain and illness occur when QI builds up or diminishes. To adjust its flow, acupuncturists insert stainless-steel needles into one or more of the acupuncture points on the skin. The needles, which cause little if any sensation, stay in place for 10 to 45 minutes.
The World Health Organization has publicly recognized that Acupuncture is suitable for the treatment of many disorders. Many patients suffer from untraceable or intractable pain in the back, head, neck and other areas, They report milder symptoms and often lasting relief after acupuncture. Acupuncture is also used to help people withdraw from drugs, ranging from heroin, cocaine, alcohol and nicotine.
The research explains that needling the acupuncture points stimulate nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. The chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body's natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and mental well-being.
